NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been appalled at the idea of a temple being built in his name.

In a series of tweets this morning, the Prime Minister expressed his displeasure at the move and asked those behind it to not do it.

He suggested that if people doing it have the time and resources, they better devote it to the effort towards a clean India.

"Have seen the news about a Temple being built in my name. I was appalled. This is shocking & against India's great traditions," Modi tweeted on Thursday morning.

It took around two years to build the temple and initially had a photograph of Prime Minister Modi. It rose to prominence after his win in the general elections last year.

Ramesh Undhad, who donated funds for temple building, said it took nearly four years to get the Prime Minister's idol made.

"This idol cost us Rs. 1.65 lakh. We tried getting it made from various artists for over three to four years but no one could make an exact copy of Modi. Then finally we called artists from Odisha and they created this idol, which looks exactly like Modi," said Unhad

RAJKOT: The Rajkot district administration has removed the idol of Narendra Modi from the temple after the Prime Minister himself expressed his disapproval.

In a series of tweets on Thursday, Prime Minister Modi said he was shocked at the news that a temple dedicated to him was built in his home state Gujarat.

"Have seen the news about a temple being built in my name. I was appalled. This is shocking and against India's great traditions. Building such temples is not what our culture teaches us," the PM tweeted.

Modi, in his tweets, advised those behind the idea of building a temple in his name to devote their time and resources towards fulfilling the dream of a Clean India.

"Personally, it made me very sad. Would urge those doing it not to do it. If you have time and resources, please devote the same towards fulfilling our dream of a Clean India," the Prime Minister said.

Soon after Modi tweeted, Ramesh Undhad, the man behind making of the temple in the name of Narendra Modi in Rajkot, decided to cancel its inauguration and cover the bust.
